I'm Jesse Off.
My wife and I recently reached financial independence, quit our jobs and are in the process of moving overseas from our home in Mesa, Arizona to Porto, Portugal with nothing but a couple suitcases and our bicycles. I have no idea what I'll feel like posting in this blog, but we're embarking on what hopefully will be a pretty interesting time in our lives that might actually be worth sharing! We'll post pictures, stories, and commentary along the way in an effort to stay connected with the people we leave behind and for also those that may be in our future.
I'm retiring at only 42 years old but still with gobs of energy for my field. I attempt to not define myself by my career, but its an inseparable part of my character and to deny it would be tragic to my mental health. This blog will likely eventually contain some technical content as I grieve for the loss of conversations of this type from ex-coworkers and old customers. I'll warn you now that I love mathematics, the LISP programming language, *BSD operating systems, and embedded FPGA hardware design and absolutely hate Linux (this was the price of making it my career), the "security" industry, and GPL open source as a religion. I'm sure my crazy may show in the non-mainstream opinions I'm bound to end up sharing on hardware and software design (i.e. I'm fairly incompatible with most of the Reddit.com hivemind).
